I Almost Forgot the Rings! : My First Experience Officiating a Wedding

Screenshot_20180107-141832For those that don’t know (or bothered to look at the other tabs on this website) I’m an ordained minister! Meaning: I have the authority to officiate marriages (…in the state of Ohio).  My first experience was over this past summer of 2017 for my friend Mike Sandy and his now wife Gail!

On one of the hottest days of the year here in Ohio I drove to Squire’s Castle in Willoughby Hills, suited up of course, and had a quick debriefing before the ceremony.  I got to meet the members of the wedding party, family members, and some friends I haven’t seen for a while.  You see, I met Mike through the Cleveland music scene and that’s how we got to know each other (I have a funny story about a gig we played in Barberton, OH, but that’s for another post).  People gathered and away we went! “Dearly beloved..” etc, etc… And you know what? I  almost forgot to have them present their rings to each other! I was so eager to say “I now pronounce you man and wife” that I totally had a brain fart… Wedding rings, I mean come on! Thankfully the best man (Mike’s brother) took over for a hot second and saved the day.

We met at the reception, I had a few drinks and some great comfort food and called it a night (ended up having band practice with Old Brooklyn right after for we had a gig coming up).  But this entire situation got me thinking; DON’T rush! You’ll forget shit.  Take your time and be patient.  Of course I was a little nervous, this being my first wedding, but at the same time I’m hard on myself and I’m going to say NO EXCUSES.  The more weddings I do the more the process will become second nature and I can loosen up a little, maybe even crack some tasteful jokes?  All I know is that I’m excited that I can offer this service to those that have found that special someone they want to spend the rest of their life with (going back to that patience thing…..) !!

Either way, Mike and Gail are now happily married and I felt the need to share this silly little story here with ya’ll.  Congrats to Mike and Gail and thanks for reading!!
